Arya Tea Estate in the East Darjeeling Valley is in the village known as Sidrabong.
The word 'Sidrabong' means 'the valley of anchovies' in the Nepali language. Although
established in 1885 as another colonial plantation, some vouch that the first tea
bushes were planted as early as 1765 by Buddhist monks or Aryas, after whom the
tea garden takes its name. A Monastery stands on the premises. Sidrabong is the
first village in India to get an electric power plant in 1897, mainly to operate the tea
factory. Arya Tea Garden is now known for its signature collection of specialty Jewel
teas, known as Pearl, Emerald, Diamond, and Ruby.
