The Teesta Valley is home to many tea estates, Samabeong Tea Estate being an important one among them. Perched at an elevation of 6000 ft above sea level, Samabeong is one of the highest tea gardens in the Kalimpong District. In the Lepcha language, ‘Samabeong’ translates to ‘corner place’. Quite befittingly, this village is situated in the remotest parts of the Darjeeling Himalayan region. The Tea Estate itself is said to have been established in 1882 by British Planters. The 132-hectare tea garden area is primarily east and west-facing. Samaobeong Tea Estate specializes in black tea with a light and brisk liquor from china hybrid bushes. Samabeong village is blessed with loamy soil and optimal rainfall, so the inhabitants also preserve some indigenous Himalayan vegetation. Neora Valley National Park and Lava Monastery are nearby and attract many tourists annually.
